An artist portfolio built around selected work

Choosing what to leave out is a large part of building an artist portfolio. A visitor should get a clear sense of your work from the first few pieces, with enough context to understand what they could commission from you.

We built Nova Quinn, our Framer portfolio template for visual artists, photographers, directors, and creative studios, around large images and a selected-work sequence. The demo presents a generative artist, but you can adapt its structure to photography, illustration, motion work, or a studio practice.

Choose the work before adjusting the layout

Start with the kind of commission you want next. Select projects that show you can do that work, then decide what each one adds to the selection. Two nearly identical pieces may say less than one finished project followed by something that shows another side of your practice.

Nova Quinn opens with a full-bleed hero and continues into a scroll-pinned work index. Each selected project gets a large area of the screen. Choose images that hold up at that size, and check the crop on a phone before committing to the sequence. Small details and wide compositions can need different crops.

The demo pairs each project with a title and a short description. Use that space to name the medium, explain the brief, or state your contribution. For a collaborative project, credit the people involved. For a self-initiated piece, say so. A few precise lines give someone a way to discuss the work with you.

Use motion where it helps someone see the work

The template includes glyph dither reveals, noise-mask hover effects, smooth scrolling, and blur fades. These give you several ways to introduce an image. Try them with your own material: a reveal that suits a bold, high-contrast composition may obscure a quiet photograph.

Review the full sequence at a normal browsing pace. Can someone see the finished image for long enough? Does the next project feel distinct? Keep titles and useful context readable while the images move, and check the experience with touch as well as a mouse.

Nova Quinn also includes a 404 page with a scrolling, bulging image grid. Replace those images along with the homepage artwork so a broken link still leads to a page that belongs to your portfolio.

Explain how a commission begins

Once someone likes the work, they need to know what you offer. Nova Quinn has sections for services, a three-step process, an introduction, and common questions. Use them to explain the work you take on and what a client should prepare before contacting you.

The demo’s process describes a generative-art workflow. Rewrite those steps around your own practice. A photographer might describe the brief, shoot, and delivery; an illustrator might explain references, sketches, and final artwork. Be specific about what the client sees or approves at each stage.

The included email form collects an address, rather than a detailed project brief. Connect it to your destination and test a submission. If you need a deadline, budget, or description before replying, add a suitable enquiry form or explain what to send by email. Update any availability date in the demo too.

Decide whether a static portfolio fits your practice

Nova Quinn has four static pages: home, privacy, terms, and 404. Projects are edited on the canvas; there is no project CMS to maintain. That suits a deliberately small selection you update by hand. Shared colors, text styles, and reusable components give you a starting point for changing the visual design.

Before launch, replace the demo artist’s biography, project claims, client logos, metrics, and testimonials with your own material, or remove the sections you do not need.
